We need help to achieve our aim to restore the Swing Bridge

We need your voice and support now more than ever! As trustees of the Rotary River Pathways Trust, we are dedicated to the restoration and maintenance of the trails and bridges. As you know we face a significant hurdle: the critical swing bridge, a vital link connecting our community was swept away during the 2022 flood.

Since then, we have been collaborating with the Central Hawkes Bay District Council on a joint project to not only rebuild the bridge but also incorporate essential wastewater pipes for future infrastructure needs. This initiative serves as a testament to our commitment to both recreational enjoyment and sustainable development for our community's future.

Despite the bridge's undeniable importance, it is currently a low priority in the Council's three-year plan. The bridge is included in their 3 Year plan but not until 2027-28. We refuse to let this setback dampen our spirits or hinder progress on restoring the Tukituki Trail to its former glory.

The current situation with our tracks and trails

The limestone trail on the Waipukurau side (Pukeora to the Old swing bridge site) is open to walkers and cyclists. Some care needs to be taken for a short section by Mt Herbert Rd culvert. There is still no river crossing. This is an out and back trail.

The limestone trail on Waipukurau side out to and beyond Ashcott Bridge to Black Creek is open but there is no bridge access across Black Creek so it is an out and back ride to and from Waipukurau.

The limestone trail on the Waipawa side is open to Lindsay bush and the Tunnel - care needs to be taken in the section from the Lindsay Road carpark to the start of the limestone stopbank. The limestone trail east to Tapairu Road is fine up to the large gap in the stopbank, but there is a trail in the berm that bypasses the gap.

All berm mountain biking/walking trails on the Waipukurau side of the river from end Mt Herbert Rd to Ashcott Bridge are rideable. Also berm trails Waipukurau Bridge to Black Creek on the Waipawa side.

The Gum Tree Farm mountain bike park is open and all trails rideable

New trail at Gum Tree Farm mountain bike park

The HBRC tree felling gang has finished in the Gum Tree Farm mountain bike park. As a result of the tree removal there are changes in the park.

  • Busta Uphill is now a downhill trail that links onto McKiwi and then TT

  • Downers Downa (top half) is open and links to Busta

  • There is a new trail - Ruataniwha, which is was designed and built by Chris Aukram and digger driver Graeme Rees. It  is expected to be ready for riding over Christmas, subject to some dry weather that will allow the trail to dry and consolidate. This will be one of our marque trails. It has been grade as Advanced  (Grade5)  because it has large drop offs and gap jumps. There are however chicken shoots for these major features.
